Proton Beam Room Dimensions

Room sizes vary from inside of 20'0" x 20'0" with a much larger real estate "footprint" due to the thick concrete vault walls. These rooms require a concrete wall (several feet thick), a ceiling vault (steel, lead brick, or lead plate), and a heavy shielded door. Shielding must be calculated by a certified and licensed radiation or health physicist or other "Radiation Expert" (as defined by NCRP or ICRP) and independently retained by the radiation therapy or oncology facility.

Radiation Shielding Requirements are Generally Based on These Factors:

• Specific proton beam treatment system model and type utilized
• Beam angles and orientation in room in relation to surrounding walls
• Projected use — treatments / procedures per day / workload
• Surrounding occupancy factors / common walls
• Concrete wall thickness (several feet)
• Ceiling vault construction — steel, lead brick, or lead plate
• Controlled vs. uncontrolled (monitored by dosimetry, general access)
• Other unique considerations per application
