Gamma Knife Rooms

Primarily utilizes 201 sources of a very high energy isotope Cobalt-60 located in a shielded "helmet" set in place over the patients head to treat head cancers and brain tumors. This technology is utilized primarily in Radiation Therapy or Oncology Centers. Room sizes vary from 20'0" x 20'0" to approx 24'0" x 24'0". Shielding must be calculated by a physicist or radiation expert retained by the facility. Shielding is based on the specific imaging equipment utilized and typically will involve a high density concrete wall (several feet thick) and ceiling vault (steel, lead brick, or lead plate) and a heavy shielded door.
