Emergency Rooms (E.R.), Special Procedures and Operating Rooms (O.R.)
Emergency Rooms, Special Procedures Rooms, and Operating Rooms utilize non-dedicated portable x-ray machines during emergency treatment, urgent trauma diagnosis, or delicate on-going medical procedures — without the inconvenience of moving patients to a radiology department for imaging. Typical energy levels are 50kVp–125kVp. Contact Ray-Bar today to discuss your E.R. or O.R. radiation shielding requirements and request a customized solution.
Room Dimensions & Shielding Overview
Room sizes vary depending upon function and procedures. These rooms usually require shielded walls, a portable control barrier or an x-ray glass control window, and shielded door(s). Shielding must be calculated by a certified and licensed radiation or health physicist or other "Radiation Expert" (as defined by NCRP or ICRP) and independently retained by the medical healthcare facility. Due to low frequency use and variety of angles, most shielding is minimal and usually of one or two different lead thicknesses.
Radiation Shielding Requirements are Generally Based on These Factors:
- Specific portable x-ray equipment model and type utilized
- Primary beam and secondary scatter radiation fields
- Estimated use — procedures per day / workload
- Variety of imaging angles used during procedures
- Surrounding occupancy factors / uncontrolled areas / common walls
- Materials used / existing materials / wall construction
- Controlled vs. uncontrolled (monitored by dosimetry, general access)
- Function of room (E.R., Special Procedures, O.R.) and unique considerations per application
Ray-Bar Has Several Products and Materials to Meet Your Radiation Shielding Requirements
Shielding for E.R., Special Procedures, and O.R. rooms typically involves one or two lead thicknesses depending upon function, estimated workloads, primary beam and secondary scatter radiation fields, surrounding occupancy factors, and other considerations. Ray-Bar offers U.L. Classified lead-backed drywall and lead backed plywood of varying thicknesses per the shielding report, Lead Lined Doors, and X-Ray Lead Glass and X-Ray Safety Lead Glass and Frames for control windows where required. X-Ray Control Barriers are also available for portable shielding applications common in these environments. For infection control in high-traffic clinical spaces, all control window frames are available with antimicrobial telescopic x-ray control view window frames. For retrofit or renovation projects, pre-finished modular retrofit shielding panels and lead vinyl flexible shielding are also available.
