Angiography Rooms / Cardiac Catheterization Labs
Angiography rooms and Cardiac Catheterization Labs primarily utilize an ionizing radioactive isotope tracer or contrasting dye to image and detect heart function, blood vessels, and other cardiac health conditions, and on-going catheter insertion procedures with real time imaging similar to live-action fluoroscopy. Typical energy levels range between 50kVp and 100kVp. Contact Ray-Bar today to discuss your angiography or cardiac catheterization lab requirements and request a customized radiation shielding solution.
Angiography Room Dimensions
These rooms are usually larger from 16'0" x 20'0" and up to 24'0" x 32'0". These rooms require shielded walls, a large x-ray glass control window minimum 48" wide x 36" high or larger for a clear view of the patient and all procedures, and shielded door(s). Shielding must be calculated by a certified and licensed radiation or health physicist or other "Radiation Expert" (as defined by NCRP or ICRP) and independently retained by the medical healthcare imaging facility.
Radiation Shielding Requirements are Generally Based on These Factors:
- Specific angiography / cardiac catheterization imaging equipment model and type utilized
- Primary beam and secondary scatter radiation fields
- Orientation of equipment in room in relation to surrounding walls
- Projected use — images / procedures per day / workload
- Surrounding occupancy factors / common walls
- Materials used / existing materials / wall construction
- Controlled vs. uncontrolled (monitored by dosimetry, general access)
- Equipment positioning, procedure volume, and adjacent occupied areas
Ray-Bar Has Several Products and Materials to Meet Your Radiation Shielding Requirements
Shielding for angiography and cardiac catheterization rooms typically involves several different lead thicknesses depending upon primary beam and secondary scatter radiation fields, surrounding occupancy factors, and other considerations. Ray-Bar offers U.L. Classified lead-backed drywall and lead backed plywood of varying thicknesses per the shielding report, Lead Lined Doors, and X-Ray Lead Glass and X-Ray Safety Lead Glass and Frames for the control room window (lead equivalency is directly dependent on the shielding report recommendations). For enhanced thermal performance or added privacy between the control and procedure areas, Insulated Glass Units and Integral Mini Blind IGUs are also available. All control window frames are available with antimicrobial telescopic x-ray control view window frames for infection control compliance. For retrofit or renovation projects, pre-finished modular retrofit shielding panels and lead vinyl flexible shielding are also available. Due to the complexity and continuous use of imaging in these environments, proper shielding design and room layout are critical to ensure safety for both patients and medical staff.
