PET Scanner Rooms / Positron Emission Tomography

 PET Scan Room

PET Scan Room

PET Scan rooms (Positron Emission Tomography) utilize a very high energy positron emitting radioactive isotope (such as Fluorine-18) with a short half-life (i.e. 110 minutes) for medical diagnosis imaging of various serious health issues such as cancer or tumors. PET scanning typically involves the higher energy levels of 511keV. Contact Ray-Bar today to discuss your PET scan room requirements and request a customized radiation shielding solution.

PET Scan Room Dimensions

Rooms are typically larger in size from 18'0" x 20'0" and up to 24'0" x 32'0". These rooms require shielded walls, a large x-ray glass control window (minimum 48" wide x 36" high) for a clear view of the patient and all procedures. Shielding must be calculated by a certified and licensed radiation or health physicist or other "Radiation Expert" (as defined by NCRP or ICRP) and independently retained by the medical healthcare imaging facility.

Radiation Shielding Requirements are Generally Based on These Factors:

  • Specific PET Scanner model and isotope utilized (e.g. Fluorine-18 and other positron emitting agents)
  • Orientation of equipment in room in relation to surrounding walls
  • Projected use — images / procedures per day / workload
  • Surrounding occupancy factors / common walls
  • Materials used / existing materials / wall construction
  • Controlled vs. uncontrolled (monitored by dosimetry, general access)
  • Dual modality application considerations (e.g. combined PET/CT), which may require additional shielding
  • Heavier lead weight load requirements and seismic considerations (structural engineer review required)
  • Support rooms required: 2 or more "uptake" patient injection rooms with heavier lead shielding, and a hot lab room for dose calibration and loading

Ray-Bar Has Several Products and Materials to Meet Your Radiation Shielding Requirements

Shielding for PET scan rooms typically involves several different heavier lead thicknesses and possible ceiling shielding. Ray-Bar offers Lead Lined Doors, X-Ray Lead Glass, X-Ray Safety Lead Glass, and Frames for the control room window (lead equivalency is directly dependent on the shielding report recommendations), U.L. Classified lead-backed drywall and lead backed plywood of varying thicknesses per the shielding report, and specialty application products such as "mirrored," "frosted," or "switchable" X-Ray Smart Glass to assist in patient privacy in compliance with current HIPAA laws. For retrofit or renovation projects, lead vinyl flexible shielding and pre-finished modular retrofit shielding panels are also available. Ray-Bar was a pioneer in the development of the prototype room and shielding of the cyclotron that produced the F-18 511keV isotope, and has since provided shielding for hundreds of PET scan installations nationwide.
