Linear Accelerator Room Dimensions

Room sizes vary from inside of 20'0" x 20'0" with a much larger real estate "footprint" due to the thick concrete "vault" walls. These rooms require a high-density concrete wall (several feet thick), a ceiling vault (steel, lead brick, or lead plate), and a heavy shielded door. Shielding must be calculated by a certified and licensed radiation or health physicist or other "Radiation Expert" (as defined by NCRP or ICRP) and independently retained by the radiation therapy or oncology facility.

Radiation Shielding Requirements are Generally Based on These Factors:

• Specific linear accelerator model and energy level (4–6MeV gamma; 10–20MeV gamma and thermal neutrons)
• Orientation of equipment in room in relation to surrounding walls
• Projected use — treatments / procedures per day / workload
• Surrounding occupancy factors / common walls
• High-density concrete wall thickness (several feet)
• Ceiling vault construction — steel, lead brick, or lead plate
• Neutron shielding requirements at higher energy levels (10–20MeV)
• Controlled vs. uncontrolled (monitored by dosimetry, general access)
